Guardianship

Guardianship. Similar to third-party custody, guardianship is another form of custody that can be awarded to individuals who have established a child-parent relationship with a child.  This is typically done when the parents are unavailable to parent for a variety of reasons, and the prospective guardian has already been raising the child.  Guardianship can also be established for adults who cannot care for themselves because of developmental disabilities. Depending on the circumstances, this can be a quick process or take several months to establish.  Both third-party custody and guardianship cases are very fact-specific, so it will be essential for us to thoroughly discuss your particular situation before deciding the best way to proceed.
